The Value of a Christian Man

Writer's picture: Krista BontragerKrista Bontrager
Last November, we attended Dr. Owen Strachan's fiery presentation at ETS. So naturally, we immediately introduced ourselves and tried to get him on our podcast. We talked about the manosphere phenomenon and his thoughts for what it means to be a Christian man.

Dr. Owen Strachan came on the show to talk about his book, The War on Men: Why Society Hates Them and Why We Need Them.

What prompted the writing of this book?

  • In the last 5-10 years, studies and metrics show that men are not doing well

  • For every young woman who drops out of college, there are 7 men in the same category

  • “Woke culture” tells us that straight, white men are the biggest menace in American society; however, interestingly, straight, white men have the highest rates of suicide

What is happening to men out in the world at large (outside the Church)?

  • Young men are being raised in an age of feminism, where masculinity is seen as bad/toxic

  • Boys are being raised in homes without fathers completely or without positive, God-loving fathers

  • The “Tate Phenomenon”--Influencer, Andrew Tate, is being platformed with millions of social media views of himself as a “strong man”...tough, fit, confident, strong, powerful–Parents beware!

  • Masculinity can be used in negative, sinful ways, but it can also be shaped to be used for God’s glory in healthy, positive ways

What are the challenges Christian men are facing?

  • Young Christian men may feel that they don’t have a pathway to maturity or they may have a fake pathway that is not good and does not ultimately lead to Godly strength

    • Not trained in Godly masculinity and how to engage with women, or how to find a vocation, or how to steward their body

    • Constantly on screens and therefore tempted to find a “willing partner” thru p*rn

  • Young Christian men and women need to be trained and discipled in Biblical manhood and womanhood

What does the Bible say about what it means to be a man?

  • Adam was created first and, as outlined in 1 Timothy 2, Adam is designated as the head of his home; in the New Covenant (ie establishment of the Church), men would be the head/leaders

  • As a result, men must be TRAINED to be leaders, to take initiative, to provide for their wife and family, to be a protector

What about the concepts of authority and submission?

  • Authority/headship and submission are glorious Biblical realities; HUMILITY is key!

  • Unfortunately, sin taints these issues, causing these concepts to be misunderstood and abused

  • Every Christian is called to submit; we are fundamentally submitted to Jesus Christ
