Our friend, Delano Squires (from the Heritage Foundation), thinks there is a very specific formula for cultural renewal. On this episode, we did a deep dive into the root causes of our cultural collapse and the pathway out of the mess.
Our guest tonight was Delano Squires, a Research Fellow in the Richard and Helen DeVos Center for Life, Religion, and Family at The Heritage Foundation. He is also a contributor to Blaze Media where he writes about faith, family, and culture as well as BlazeTV’s Fearless with Jason Whitlock podcast.
Tonight’s discussion was a follow-up to a previous conversation we had on human flourishing. Check out that episode to understand what Scripture says is the source of real human flourishing (link in resources below).
Delano is a contributor to Katy Faust’s new book, Pro-Child Politics, where he has a chapter on race, addressing the following issues:
The lie of racial essentialism
The lie of good discrimination
The way we talk about race today hurts children (obsession & messaging centered around race)
How to move forward with a Biblical framework
Historical Roots & Progression of the African American Family:
Historically strong roots in the Christian Scriptures & the Church
Private virtue and public morality
Began to change during the 1960s & Civil Rights Movement
Families were steered off course by James Cone and the Liberation Theology movement–traded Biblical fidelity for the pursuit of social justice
Radicalism and revolution both inside and outside the church, which has now led to black churches parroting many of the same leftist, progressive talking points (eg abortion, same-sex marriage, transgenderism) and using the Scriptures to justify it
What is the Success Sequence?
Research shows that millennials who accomplish the following tasks–in this order!--will have a single-digit poverty rate by the time they hit their mid-30s. Stats hold up regardless of previous family socio-economic status (SES) and race:
Finish high school
Secure full-time employment
Marry and then have children
Why aren’t black leaders talking about the Success Sequence?
The progressive left, including politicians, pundits, preachers, professors, and performers (5 P’s) boil the issues down to income inequality, structural inequality, and systemic racism; therefore, the only solutions they are interested in are related to bigger government and better white people.
Agency and personal responsibility within the black community is not considered
What role can Christians play in all this?
We have a tremendous responsibility and obligation to get involved!
We are facing first-order, definitional issues (eg What is a man/woman? What is a family? What is marriage?)
We need to have courage to say what God has said & be faithful to Truth
Keep an eye out: Delano will have a new book coming out next year where he will address what he calls the Sinister Six:
Paternalists
Feminists
LGBT activists
Anti-racists
Functional atheists
Abortionists
